How Award-Winning Hotels Price Their Rooms Confidently

Key takeaways:

  • Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best Awards winners rarely compete on being the cheapest; they focus on delivering exceptional value.
  • Understanding your ideal guest helps create the right pricing strategy for your property.
  • The strongest independent properties know their worth and price accordingly.
  • Dynamic Pricing helps accommodation providers adapt rates based on demand while staying in control.

Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards 2026 celebrate the accommodation businesses that consistently deliver exceptional guest experiences, based on genuine traveller reviews.

This year, we noticed something interesting when looking through the UK rankings: 10 freetobook customers were recognised across multiple categories, including more than one-third of finalists in the UK B&Bs and Inns category.

After speaking with some of these award-winning properties, one thing became clear: the businesses guests rate most highly rarely compete on price. Instead, they focus on delivering experiences that guests believe are worth paying for.

This is the second blog in our series exploring the lessons we can learn from Tripadvisor’s Best of the Best winners.

Why don’t award-winning hotels compete on price?

Setting the right rate can feel challenging.

Independent property owners often tell us the same thing: “the market feels incredibly competitive.”  With rising costs, changing guest expectations, and new competitors appearing all the time, lowering prices can feel like the easiest way to win bookings.

However, when we asked this year’s Tripadvisor winners what contributes to their success, nobody mentioned discounting.

Instead, they talked about understanding their guests, knowing what makes their property unique, and creating experiences guests genuinely value.

Chris from Fossil Tree Hotel (Small & Boutique UK #6) puts it perfectly:

“Knowing our market niche and ensuring all our communication messages underline the type of hotel experience we offer is key to attracting the type of guests who’ll enjoy the experience we provide.”

The lesson is simple: successful properties know exactly who they’re for.

They understand their ideal guest, communicate what makes them different, and build their offering around those expectations. That confidence allows them to charge rates that reflect the value they provide.  After all, guests rarely remember paying an extra £15 a night. They do remember the warm welcome, the comfortable night’s sleep, the breakfast they still talk about months later.

That doesn’t mean charging the highest prices; it means charging the right price. The best businesses know their worth.

How can independent hotels price with confidence?

Of course, knowing your value is one thing; pricing confidently every day is another.

Demand changes constantly, local events fill calendars, competitor rates move throughout the year, and booking patterns shift from week to week. Managing all these factors can be time-consuming, and it can be easy to miss opportunities to increase revenue or attract more bookings.

This is where Dynamic Pricing can help.

What is Dynamic Pricing and how does it help hotels?

Dynamic Pricing automatically adjusts room rates based on changes in demand, helping accommodation providers keep their prices aligned with the market.

Many freetobook customers use Dynamic Pricing to remove the guesswork from everyday pricing decisions. It helps properties respond to changing demand while ensuring their rates reflect the value they offer

Importantly, hoteliers remain in control by setting minimum and maximum prices they are comfortable with.

The best businesses never stand still. They’re always looking for small improvements that add up over time.

Dynamic Pricing is one of those improvements. It works quietly in the background, responding to changes in demand, so property owners can spend more time focusing on what matters most: delivering the kind of experience guests remember.

The biggest pricing lesson from Tripadvisor’s winners

The biggest takeaway from this year’s award winners is not that they charge the highest prices. It’s that they understand their value.

They know their guests, understand what makes their property special, and use the right tools to support better decisions.

If you’re already delivering an exceptional guest experience, your pricing should work just as hard as you do.
