Paul and Alan have been running their luxury, 5* B&B and wedding business at Saltcote Place in Rye, East Sussex since 2008. The large 11 bedroomed property itself is stunning – originally commissioned and built back in 1905 as a wedding present for Captain Hennessey and his new bride. Over the years it has had various uses until Paul and Alan bought it “on impulse” and spent the following four years extensively renovating it to the very high standards their guests now enjoy.
Together they have built a formidable reputation for providing five-star hospitality whilst offering a highly bespoke almost ‘concierge’ experience, organising and hosting everything from intimate weddings to surprise anniversary weekends, family reunions and living funerals. The absolute focus for their core business is on guests and occasions that celebrate love and passion.
It all starts with the preparation for the guest’s visit and Paul excels at taking the personal approach to a whole new level. For anniversary weekends he revels in the elements of surprise and romance, encouraging husbands to secretly dig out and send over forgotten photos that will be placed in the room before their arrival. "We have plenty of lovely ‘repeat offenders’, (guests who return for anniversary after anniversary). One German couple recently just stayed with us for their fourth visit in the last 10 years" he says happily.
From the lavish champagne breakfasts served from a more leisurely 9am to the nightcaps left in the bedrooms at the evening ‘turndown’, no detail is missed and every possible effort is made to create a relaxing retreat. Children are not allowed to stay as guests unless they are part of a wedding or anniversary party that have exclusive use of the property. “We never mix wedding guests and parties with our other guests” Paul explains.
The property has been using freetobook since March 2014. Would they recommend us to others? “Absolutely. I’ve had the priviledge and pleasure of dealing with almost everyone at freetobook from company Co-Director Craig to Eleanor and the entire tight-knit Customer Support team. When questioned about the cost Paul responded “The price is only what you pay, the value is reflected in the way you feel at departure and the memories you take with you.”
